Nihonbashi Revitalization Plan

Revive

The power to revitalize a city is born through learning from the past and borrowing from the wisdom of those who have lived before us. With an emphasis on coexistence with people and nature, we are working to revive the scenery, functions, and liveliness of Nihonbashi, which has been lost along with the development of economy and transportation.

Current initiatives

Nihonbashi River cleanup activities (conducted once every two months since 2008)
Hanakaido

Numerous efforts to revive the landscape and liveliness of the city

Boat tours utilizing the Nihonbashi River
Public viewing of the underground vaults of the Bank of Japan and other cultural assets
“Washing of Nihonbashi Bridge” (held on the fourth Sunday in July) (since 1971)
ECO EDO Nihonbashi (conducted annually from July to September)
Reproduction of the picture scroll “Kidai Shoran” on permanent display on the wall of the underground concourse of Mitsukoshimae Station (from November 2009)

Local organizations working to revitalize Nihonbashi

The Famed Nihonbashi Bridge Preservation Society

Established in 1968. The organization works to revitalize Nihonbashi and the surrounding area through the preservation of the famous Nihonbashi Bridge and the revitalization of the Nihonbashi River.

Main activities

Bridge cleaning, commemorative events, etc.

Nihonbashi Renaissance 100th Anniversary Planning Committee

Established in 1999. Advocates a vision for the revitalization of the Nihonbashi area and the Nihonbashi River, and disseminates urban development measures for the 21st century.

Main activities

Research and recommendations for area revitalization. Recommendations for river restoration methods.

Nihonbashi Restoration Promotion Council

Established in 2006. In cooperation with Chuo Ward, the committee will study issues such as the restoration of the Nihonbashi River and the removal of the Metropolitan Expressway.

Eco Edo Nihonbashi

Established in 2008. Learning from the recycling-oriented society of the Edo period and transmitting the spirit of symbiosis and compassion from Nihonbashi.
