Nihonbashi Revitalization Plan

Stages 1 and 2 of the Nihonbashi Revitalization Plan: Initiatives to date

The residents’ fond memories and nostalgia for the once thriving Nihonbashi area eventually transformed into an aspiration to restore its former glory. With a strong desire to make Nihonbashi even more vibrant by creating new attractions while preserving its culture and traditions, the “Nihonbashi Revitalization Plan” was established.

The “Nihonbashi Revitalization Plan” to bring back the bustling atmosphere to Nihonbashi

In March 2004, Coredo Nihonbashi (Nihonbashi 1-Chome Building), a new commercial facility developed by Mitsui Fudosan Co., Ltd. was built on the site of the closed Tokyu Nihonbashi department store. This led to the start of the “Nihonbashi Revitalization Plan,” a joint public-private-local initiative, which has now taken a major step forward in reality.

In order to restore the bustle and liveliness to Nihonbashi, which once flourished as the cultural and economic center of Japan, the entire Nihonbashi area is currently undergoing a revitalization effort, and various revitalization measures, ranging from cleanup activities to events aimed at attracting customers and disseminating information, have been initiated. By continuously conducting such activities, more and more new visitors have been coming to Nihonbashi, and a sense of urban mobility and circulation has begun to emerge.
