Nihonbashi Revitalization Plan

Water city revitalization

Five redevelopment projects* are scheduled to be completed along the Nihonbashi River, covering an area of approximately 6.7 ha (approximately 20,000 tsubo) and a total facility floor area of 370,000 tsubo. Once this development and the undergrounding of the Metropolitan Expressway are realized, a vast waterfront space, which is approximately 100 m wide and 1,200 m long including the width of the river, will be created.

Along the riverfront, advanced mixed-use developments such as plazas, offices, and accommodation facilities will be developed, in addition to commercial stores that will create a lively atmosphere. The hydrophilic space will be developed as a space for art and relaxation, and festivals and conferences representing the area are planned to be held in the space.

* Redevelopment is currently in the planning stage. The scale and other details are subject to change in the future.

What will be realized through the restoration of the rich waterfront area

The hydrophilic space and pedestrian network created by the redevelopment along the Nihonbashi River will unify the Nihonbashi area with the Tokyo Station area. In addition, the boat transportation network, using Nihonbashi as its hub, connects a wide variety of waterfront locations. Nihonbashi, the city of water, where the urban walkable network and boat transportation network overlap, will truly become the birthplace of Tokyo’s main artery.

Walkable network connecting Nihonbashi and Tokyo Station

The park-like hydrophilic space, which is approximately 1,200 meters long and 100 meters wide including the width of the river, seamlessly connects the Nihonbashi area and the area around Tokyo Station. The area around Tokyo Station will become an enjoyable area to walk around, as it is connected to the unique alleyways in the surrounding area.

Boat transportation network linking the city center and the waterfront area

Nihonbashi is the center of the city’s boat transportation network, located near Tokyo Station. It is connected to Haneda, Odaiba, Shibaura, Harumi, Toyosu, Asakusa, and other waterfront locations, offering new travel options for sightseeing and daily life.
