Learn about Nihonbashi
The Nihonbashi bridge served as the starting point of the five Gokaido roads that stretched through each region of Japan and as a center of water transport and trade. People, things, and excitement ... everything came from across this bridge, and it continues to thrive as Japan's center of commerce and economy. In this urban district, many famous long-standing shops still stand proudly today. Historic spots and old sites brimming with a sense of Nihonbashi's long history, as well as treasured architectural structures rich in ambiance, are vigilantly maintained in great condition, blending superbly with the newer modern cityscape. This portion of the website focuses on this long-spanning history of Nihonbashi, as well as the urban district's progress throughout time as seen from the viewpoints of "roads," "commerce," and "culture" and spotlights the "Nihonbashi Revitalization Plan," as well as a future vision of what the Nihonbashi may look like after the Project is completed.
